Audi recalls 9,048 E‑Tron SUVs over battery fire risk

Owners are being told to limit charging to 80% until a remedy is available, and the root cause is still unknown.

Audi has issued a safety recall for 9,048 Q4 E-Tron and Q4 Sportback E-Tron SUVs built in 2024 and 2025. It follows a similar notice Volkswagen issued earlier this month for 22,524 ID.4 electric SUVs. The Audi models use battery cells from SK On's Hungarian plant and share a platform with the ID.4.

Risk of battery fire

The problem is the batteries' tendency to catch fire when charged above 80% of their capacity. Audi says thermal propagation, heat spreading from cell to cell, could trigger a battery fire. The root cause is still unknown, and Audi estimates only about 0.1% of the cars have the defect. Audi says it knows of no fires, crashes or injuries linked to the problem.

Until a remedy is available, Audi advises owners to limit charging to 80%. Owners can take their cars to an authorized Audi dealer, where the battery will be checked and, if needed, a temporary limit of 80% will be set. Audi expects to mail interim letters to owners on 18 December. Owners with questions can call Audi customer service on 1-800-253-2834.

Volkswagen Group also issued three recalls with Germany's KBA last week, covering 72,668 EVs worldwide. Those include certain batches of the ID. Buzz, ID.3, ID.4 and ID.7 built from 2022 to 2025, and Cupra Born models from 2022 to 2024. Audi's recall number is 93SK. The NHTSA campaign number is 26V698, and drivers can call the NHTSA Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
