Apple is still working on 6G, the next step after 5G, and expects the new standard to arrive around 2030. The company has been preparing for 6G since at least 2020. To help, Apple is hiring a 6G Cellular Modem Systems Engineer who will define and build the next generation of cellular technology.

Apple designs its own modems, so it needs to be ready for 6G when the standard rolls out. The company is also a founding member of the Next G Alliance, an industry group set up by the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions to push 6G forward in North America.

6G is still in development. No spectrum bands have been set, and official performance requirements will be approved later this year. 6G aims to provide faster upload speeds, lower latency and better power efficiency.

5G is already used for home internet, and 6G is expected to expand that role. Several other companies are researching 6G, including Qualcomm, Nokia, Samsung and Ericsson.
