Apple is pushing more premium games onto the App Store this year than last, according to Carson Oliver, the Worldwide Head of the App Store. The lineup now includes popular titles that originally launched on PC and consoles, such as Balatro, Stardew Valley, Slay the Spire, and Bloons TD 6. Oliver highlighted that cozy games, management simulations and roguelikes are among the categories that have found particular success on mobile devices.
Why iPhone gamers matter
A key factor in this shift is the large generation of players whose first gaming device was an iPhone. Growing up with touch controls, they are accustomed to games designed for direct interaction, giving indie developers a ready‑made audience that embraces mobile‑specific gameplay. Oliver noted that this user base makes iPhone and iPad the ultimate canvas for indie innovation.
Apple also offers developers flexible revenue options, combining premium downloads with subscription‑based Apple Arcade access. The company has introduced Creative Assets, a tool that lets indie studios showcase custom artwork in search results and product page headers, improving discovery. Editorial recommendations further help smaller studios stand beside major franchises.
To ease the porting process, Apple released Game Porting Toolkit 4, MetalFX, and open‑source Unity plug‑ins that cut the time, effort and cost required to bring PC and console games to Apple devices. The recent Indie Games Week promotion highlighted titles like Sifu, Vampire Crawlers, No Man’s Sky and Little Kitty, Big City, underscoring the expanding range of premium titles available directly on the App Store.
