#Andreessen Horowitz #a16z Frontier
Andreessen Horowitz has renamed its crypto‑focused fund a16z Crypto to a16z Frontier and broadened its mandate to include artificial intelligence, robotics, autonomous machines, and other emerging technologies. The change follows the view that blockchains have moved from being headline technology to a background tool in many products, so the firm believes it makes more sense to classify companies by what they do instead of the technology they use. Chris Dixon, who runs the original crypto team, will lead the new fund alongside Marc Andreessen, Ben Horowitz, Eddy Lazzarin and Guy Wuollet.
Maintaining Crypto Investments
Despite the rebrand, the firm says it will continue to invest in crypto companies and to advocate for sensible regulation. The portfolio still includes early‑stage and established projects such as Coinbase, Solana, and Uniswap, all of which have helped the fund grow to roughly $10 billion in investments across its five funds since 2018. The move is part of a broader trend among VC firms that began with crypto but are now looking beyond digital assets.
Dixon argues that blockchains are already embedded in mainstream finance and fintech, so labeling a company as ‘crypto’ is less useful. He envisions new networks that connect people with intelligent agents capable of learning, coordinating, producing, and transacting, and sees blockchains as a way to give these networks native economic capabilities and enable machine‑to‑machine payments. The firm also expects a proliferation of autonomous machines that can sense, reason, and act in the physical world, driven by advances in AI and biology.
Why the Shift Matters
The renaming also signals a commitment to long‑horizon technology waves. Since joining a16z in 2013, Dixon has focused on investing in frontier startups that build new devices, networks, and full‑stack businesses. In May 2026, the firm launched a $2.2 billion Fund 5, describing it as a vehicle to turn new infrastructure into products people use every day. By widening its scope, a16z Frontier hopes to capture opportunities that may take years to mature while still supporting the crypto ecosystem it helped create.
