Mastiff, the production company for the Swedish version of the reality competition show The Challenge, had given an AI agent access to its production server. The agent erased the completed edit of the show’s second season. The deletion happened weeks before the planned Nov. 22 premiere, and the missing files could not be recovered. As a result, the network has postponed the season to 2027, and the production crew must begin the post‑production process from scratch.
The Human Factor
TV4’s investigation found that the loss was caused by a failure in the company’s backup system, not by the AI agent acting on its own. The program director, Mia Lindqvist, told Aftonbladet that the human factor at the production company was to blame. She also noted that the raw footage still exists, so the team can re‑cut the episode but the extra time required will push the launch further.
Similar incidents involving AI tools deleting important data have been reported. A startup founder said a coding assistant erased a live database, and a developer noted that a GPT model wiped a Mac’s files. These stories underline that AI can make serious mistakes and that backup practices must be reliable.
