A streamlined ad filter reappears in the Firefox extension catalog after past disputes

Raymond Hill brings the lightweight version of his content blocker back to Mozilla after walking away two years ago over review clashes.

Raymond Hill has republished uBlock Origin Lite to Mozilla's official add-on hub, ending a two-year absence. The reappearance gives Firefox users direct access to the streamlined content filter without having to manually compile code from the source repository.

The rift began in 2024 during an administrative review of the software. Reviewers at Mozilla flagged the tool, alleging it gathered user information and relied on unapproved code segments.

Hill strongly disputed those findings, pointing out that the flagged elements were harmless placeholder files long utilized in his primary extension. Although Mozilla subsequently conceded its mistake and reinstated the software, Hill had grown weary of the red tape, voluntarily pulling his build and halting support for the browser.

That withdrawal created an unusual contrast across the web. Competitors like Google were pushing users toward the Manifest V3 architecture, nudging Chromium audiences into minimalist filters like uBlock Origin Lite. Firefox users, meanwhile, lacked an official way to install that same lightweight edition.

Tension surrounding Mozilla's submission pipeline extended beyond individual disputes. Lengthy evaluation bottlenecks frustrated software authors, with some updates sitting unapproved in review queues for nearly two months earlier in the year.

For many desktop users, the absence of the lighter tool went largely unnoticed. Firefox maintained support for older extension designs, allowing the full-featured edition of uBlock Origin to operate without the strict rule limits imposed by Chromium browsers.

The return holds greater practical significance on portable hardware. Running full filtering engines on modest Android devices can tax system memory, making a simplified blocker that operates with minimal background overhead noticeably beneficial for mobile browsing speeds.

Beyond mobile performance, the restored listing signals an easing of friction between an independent open-source author and Mozilla's review staff, renewing standard distribution for a popular utility.
