The government has released 28 proposed changes to heavy vehicle rules as part of Phase 3 of its Land Transport Rules Reform Programme. The changes aim to cut compliance costs and increase productivity for operators while maintaining safety standards. This is the start of the consultation.
Key Proposals for Load and Fire Trucks
Among the proposals, heavy vehicles would be allowed to carry more weight, which the government says would reduce the number of vehicle movements. Fire trucks would be exempt from mass limits, and operators of crane and sucker trucks would face fewer restrictions under specialist weight limits. Overdimension operators would gain flexibility on when and where they travel, including on Auckland motorways and tolled roads, and time restrictions would be relaxed.
The consultation seeks feedback on exempting rigid agricultural vehicles from existing mass limits, with safeguards for critical infrastructure, following strong requests from the agricultural sector. The proposals were developed with input from heavy vehicle operators, emergency services, KiwiRail and local government. The government is asking the wider industry and the public for their views to refine the details.
The consultation follows earlier August changes that removed permit requirements for 50MAX vehicles and simplified HPMV requirements. No closing date for submissions has been announced.
